To Win by Experience and Mental Quality – WONG Ka Man

Table tennis player, WONG Ka Man was lucky enough to ‘participate’ in the Paralympics Games for the first time as table tennis was put under demonstration at the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games. Since the International Paralympic Committee continued to suspend the category for Persons with Intellectual Disability from competing at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, Ka Man has to wait for 8 long years to get a ticket to fulfill her “Paralympics Dream”.

In preparation for the Paralympic Games, Ka Man trains more than 3 hours per day, including regular table tennis practice and fitness exercise. Although, the time of the Paralympic Games is coming close, Ka Man is not nervous at all. “Before a large competition like this, the most important thing is to relax. I have got some good experiences from the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games. Even though I only got placed fourth, I think it was a great accomplishment. I hope that I can gain experience and obtain good results at the London 2012 Paralympic Games by having great mental quality”, said Ka Man.

Don’t want to make the same mistake of being too stressed

Any confidence in getting a medal? Ka Man expressed, “I don’t want to think about it, I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself!” She recalled her experience of first winning a match but losing the game at the end at this year’s Slovakia Open, playing against a Russian player, “Towards the end of the game, I was too eager to win. My hands were tight and dripping with cold sweat. My mind was a complete mess, making me to slide from the winning side to the losing side!” Nowadays, she knows how to relieve her stress and her best ways to relax is playing piano. “Music can ease my pressure and I am very relaxed when I am practicing the piano. I am already Grade 5 in piano.” Ka Man voiced with joy.
