A Cheerful Athlete - WU Ching Man

WU Ching Man started to participate in athletics ever since she was in Primary 4. What is the most rewarding thing that she finds in playing athletics? “It’s Happiness!” said Ching Man. Athletics brings happiness to Ching Man as it enables her to meet many new friends and other athletes over the world, and she also enjoys her relationships with her teammates and coaches. Thanks to her strong explosiveness, she often obtains outstanding results in sprints. She is also keen on long jumps. “The feeling of long jumping into the sandbox is pretty fun!” she said. Just by looking at her appearance, she is quite mature. In reality, her passion towards long jump comes from the naivety of a child. Her playful attitude towards long jump continues to encourage Ching Man to keep on practicing to improve her skills.

Despite the hardships in training, Ching Man always carries a positive mind and faces all the setbacks encountered by holding one faith in mind - representing Hong Kong in overseas competition. She still remembers the first time she left Hong Kong to Xi’an to compete in the Special Olympics Games. She was just holding on to the thought of enjoyment and participation, at the end she surprised herself with great results! Ching Man is most impressed at the 2014 INAS World Indoor Athletics Championships in France. She surprised herself by jumping 4.44m in long jump and bringing home a bronze medal. She was not prepared to receive an award and she had to borrow one of her teammates’ uniform. She then stood on the podium, waiting for her award with an amazed smile.

Even though Ching Man has a considerable amount of competition experience, her most unforgettable moment wasn’t the process of pain and gain, nor was it the moment she set foot on the podium, but her experience of an earthquake in New Zealand. She described that the earthquake came without a warning, “The feeling while in bed when an earthquake hits was like being on top of a pudding, bouncy and wiggly. Quite funny!” Her descriptions are quite playful but it contains her uttermost positive attitude. It shows her talent to be able to see the best in the worse case of scenarios.

Guess who is Ching Man’s idol? It’s SO Wa Wai, also known as “Magic Kid”, the famous Paralympian runner in Hong Kong. Ching Man became very excited whenever SO was being mentioned. Ching Man and SO Wa Wai first met in a competition held in Malaysia in 2006. She even proudly mentioned “I am friends with him on Facebook!” Since then, she regards SO as her idol as well as her role model. In the future, she hopes to get good results in competitions, and gloriously return to Hong Kong like SO.
